Jesus Did It!
By: Keith Isenhart
After I moved out of my parent’s home, I did not go to church at all. I felt I was doing well on my own without Jesus. And my beliefs on that stayed strong until I got engaged, and a year later became a first time father at the age of 19.
My son was diagnosed with Carpenters Syndrome. My fast paced life all of a sudden came to a stop. This innocent child had many disabilities. The hospital Chaplain came up to me and asked, “How’s your faith, son?”
I looked at this man and answered, “What faith?”
He replied by saying, “Trust in our heavenly Father, son. Give all your trouble and worries to Him.”
For the first time ever in my life, I knelt next to my son’s bed in the I.C.U. Unit, and began to let my tears flow and my first prayer out. I can recall that pray as if I said it yesterday, yet as of this writing that was 17 years ago (2010).
“Jesus – I’ve never came to you for anything in my life. Please hear my cry for my little boy.” That prayer ended up taking a half hour, and when it was all said, I felt as if I had a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.
As the years went by, my son needed a surgery in his head to prevent his head with filling with too much fluid. His head would swell up often. This is because his head doesn’t allow the fluids to drain into the body as a normal child’s would do.
He ended up with a shunt. Every surgery my son had, he was always faced with a 50/50 chance of dying or living. I’ve always prayed for my son.
As a few years went by, he needed another surgery to try to fix it. I almost lost it. My son was at the age of four, and almost died. As they were operating, my son lost so much blood. After the surgery, he took a lot longer than expected to recover. Once home, he was up and he and I continued to do more stuff -- playing Lego’s, finger painting, walks; so much more.
During those years I was able to enjoy my son, he was not just my son, but he was my best fiend too. He was like the little brother I never had. As he got a little older, we bonded much more. Movies, fishing, Frisbee, jokes, games, etc. – we enjoyed many things together.
As he became a teenage, we were inseparable. My wife would smile and say things such as, “Keith and his shadow.” My son, my best fiend, my little angel.
But I sinned, by committing a crime. I messed up a good family, my small family! I got arrested April 13, 2007. My son was gone off to school before I was taken away. I called home collect, asking him for his forgiveness and to never give up on me.
He said these words, “Dad, you said you’d always be here for me. Now you’re gone. Why dad – why - did you go away?”
I told him what I’d done, and then again asked him for his forgiveness. He told me, “Dad, I forgive you, but I’m still angry. I’ll pray for you Dad; that’s what son’s do.”
I cried. I told my son that I promise to get all the help I needed. Later, I got sentenced to four years, 9 -15 years, and no contact with my wife nor children. So much of my boy’s happiness, and my wife’s happiness, and my own happiness ... I destroyed by a sexual act.
I believe God put me here for a reason; to teach me to slow down - take nothing for granted – get RIGHT and learn to STAY right with Him. Since being locked up, I've gotten saved and baptized! I’ve gotten into G.E.D. class as well. Also, I attend church 4-5 times weekly. I do my best to smile, but find it hard at times to do.
Does Jesus save? Yes, yes, yes!!! I am truly blessed.
Now back to my son. My son tells me that he is looking forward to me being out, so we can hang out, etc. He says he has so much to share with me.
Are you ready for THIS? He’s a sergeant now in R.O.T.C.! My son! A sergeant in R.O.T.C.?! My special needs child came so far, thank you Jesus! To YOU be all the glory and thanksgiving!
I’ll end this testimony by telling you these words: Give the Lord a chance. You have NOTHING to loose, but so much to gain. Jesus is not just for one season. He’s for EVERY season.
