RESPONDING TO MISTREATMENT
Jesus Did It!
“For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God
one endures grief, suffering wrongfully.” (1 Peter 2:19, NKJV)
Bryan was a very distinguished African-American who worked for seventeen years with a large insurance company. He was considered to be the best man for promotion to vice-president, but when the position opened up, it was given to a less qualified Caucasian man.
His lawsuit for racial discrimination was in motion when his pastor preached about God’s way of handling mistreatment. In a private discussion about his case, his pastor asked him, “Do you want to do it God's way or your way?"
He admitted he loved the Lord and wanted to do it God’s way, so they prayed together. The next day he approached the man that had gotten his promotion and said, "I want to be the first one here to congratulate you on your promotion. I want you to know that I'm going to be your best employee."
Within a few weeks, a large international insurance company contacted him about a job. He told them that he wasn’t interested in a change, he had built a reputation of integrity with his clients and had many benefits with his present employer.
They asked him to talk to his wife, write down his desired salary, then meet a week later. In order to stop their pursuit of him, he set his salary at three times the amount he made in his current role as a Junior Executive.
Before he could show them his figure, they offered him four times the salary he was making. His speechless response made them think it wasn’t enough, so they raised it again and added benefits.
He told them he wanted to pray about it with his wife, and they agreed. The Lord answered both him and his wife. "Son, you put your case in My hands. I have vindicated you. This is my promotion.” Today, he is one of the top men in the world headquarters of a company that dwarfs the one in which he experienced mistreatment.
Our promotion comes when we place our case in the hands of God. The apostle Peter describes what will happen when we respond correctly.
“not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing..” (I Peter 3:9, NKJV)
God is a compassionate father and judge, His judgments are just and the best thing for us. No matter the situation we are in, we need to let God defend us, for His Word says, “Do not avenge yourselves but rather give place to wrath, for it is written vengeance is mine, I will repay says the Lord.” (Romans 12:19, NKJV)
God wants us to inherit blessing instead of seeking revenge, which restricts the blessing. Peter goes on in chapter three to quote David’s Psalm 34.
“He who would love life
And see good days,
Let him refrain his tongue from evil,
And his lips from speaking deceit.
Let him turn away from evil and do good;
Let him seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,
And His ears are open to their prayers;
But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil."
(1 Peter 3:10-12, NKJV)
There are three main reasons the Lord tells us not to avenge or defend ourselves:
God’s blessing comes in many ways. Sometimes it is financial blessing. Other times it is wisdom or understanding. All of us have different gifts and the harvest of blessing usually comes in areas where God has gifted us.
I personally went through mistreatment and chose to bless the one who had slandered my reputation. I confided in a friend what a difficult choice it was, but felt it was the right thing to do. He jokingly advised me, “Be like Mr. Moon. Every month the moon comes up in full, and every coyote, wolf and dog comes out and howls at it, but the moon just keeps shining. John, just keep shining! Keep preaching the pure Word of God, obey Him fully, and love people.”
When offenses and mistreatment come, suffer like our Lord Jesus; keep shining and love people.
“Father, I don’t want to respond man’s way. I want to do things your way. Give me strength to bless instead of curse, as I place my case in your hands.”
