THE SPIRITUAL LAW OF THE HARVEST
With: Beth Moore
“Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.
He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will
return with joy carrying sheaves with him.” (Psalm 126:5-6)
Everyday, we spend our energy sowing some kind of seed and our “now” sowing will have “later” reaping, according to the Word of God. Most people focus on the negative results of reaping what is sown.
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction.” (Galatians 6:7)
When we realize we have been sowing to the carnal flesh we must fall on our face and repent. This is a wonderful right we have as sons and daughters of God. 1 John 1:9 basically says that we get up from repenting totally purified by Christ. So now let’s focus on the positive opportunity God has placed before us in the law of the harvest.
“The one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:8-9)
One of LIFE’s mission partners gave me a startling fact about sowing seed as Keith and I helped feed malnourished people in Angola. He said, “People are so hungry that they eat the seed they have instead of planting it for a harvest.”
Immediately, I saw the spiritual parallel of his statement. You and I have eaten the seed of the Word instead of sowing it. In the immediacy of getting it, the seed tastes good, and we feel full, but it will not bring a harvest, because it didn’t get down into the reality of our lives.
Recently, someone told me they had taken my course Breaking Free seven times. I told her, “Unless you are the facilitator of that study, you need to now break free from Breaking Free.”
We get into celebrating a good word, but continue in our compulsions and addictions. When you do a Bible study are you doing what the study said? Did you put it into practice and walk out the principles or are you still caught in a stronghold of sin? You may need a new teacher, but nine times out of ten, you just got full on the Word that tasted good. You celebrated or wept over it, but didn’t sow it in your soil.
In James 1:19-25 we are told, “Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. For men’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.”
How do we humbly accept the Word planted in us? I know what it is like to deceive myself by “eating” the word without sowing it into my spirit. When I did that, God leaned over me and seemed to whisper into my spirit, “I’m glad you’re touched, Beth. Why don’t you do something?”
Don’t merely listen to the Word and deceive yourselves. The malnourished Angolans must plant their seed into the soil to stop the cycle of hunger. In the spiritual parallel, we must sow the seed of His Word into our spirit. Just as a type of death happens to the seed planted in the ground, our fleshly rights will often experience a type of death before we experience the reaping.
If we have faith to sow the seed of God’s word, we are guaranteed a harvest, and if you’ve sown seed in a time of sorrow but things haven’t changed, something huge is at stake. Don’t lose heart.
“He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy carrying sheaves with him.” (Psalm 126:6)
There is nothing like a season of sorrow to bring you closer to God. Other people may encourage us, but they cannot become a savior to us. The bigger the test, the bigger the ramifications will be. If you go out weeping and carrying seed to sow, your descendents your entire line will be marked by your faithfulness.
Will you dare to trust Him and sow the seed of God’s word in your life? When you choose to sow in obedience, He will be faithful to grant you a harvest.
“Jesus, I want the seed of your Word planted deeply in my life. I will believe you over my emotions and my own self destructive desires. I don’t want to eat the seed, but keep sowing regardless of the challenges I face. I will sing songs of joy as Your Word produces the harvest.”
