Jesus Did It!
Do you feel hopeless and helpless? Feeling trapped with no way out?
Are these feeling overwhelming you to the point you are not able to function very well, or at all? Can't eat? Can't sleep?
Are you hurting inside from a pain that is very deep? Wounds perhaps from your childhood? Perhaps there are circumstances that are overwhelming you, making you feel depressed.
You can't always change your circumstances, but you can change your perspective.
If you do feel like killing yourself, please don't. I know someone who felt so depressed that they couldn't see any reason to live. The painful feelings just wouldn't go away. What's the use, why live? No one would cares if I'm dead or alive. Tomorrow seemed to look the same, a feeling that there was no light at the end of the tunnel.
That was me, some 30 years ago. Today is different. Much different. Even though at the time, I felt helpless and my circumstances seemed hopeless, I did find the Light at the end of the tunnel, or should I say the Light found me.
(To read Doug's full-length testimony of how God moved in his life, you can click on the following link: http://www.precious-testimonies.com/BornAgain/a-c/BungeDoug.htm ).
Of course that light is, Jesus Christ. He says in the gospel of John, "I am the light of the world" I'm not talking about religion here, I'm talking about a living and loving God with whom you can have a personal relationship. That's the key difference between institutional religion and a personal relationship with your Creator. He's someone you can talk to, and He will listen to you and comfort you in your darkest hour, no matter how bleak it may seem.
If you don't know Jesus and are reading this, there is something you must do first to enter in that relationship with Him. To make it easier and so I don't have to write it all out, I would like you to click on the following link. Then when you're done, you can return to this page. Knowing God Personally
Once you've made that commitment to Christ, and opened your wounded heart to Him, He can begin the process of healing your wounded heart. Now, notice I said process, not instantaneously. We live in an instant society, but life isn't usually like that. It took time for you to be wounded in the first place, it'll takes time to heal. I can say this from personal experience. Even after I made my commitment to Christ and turned from a sinful way of life to living for God, I still had problems with depression. The process of healing took time, it didn't happen overnight.
One of the keys to overcoming depression is getting off your case. Now as a follower of Christ, you are not your own master any more, and it's a good thing. I'm telling you, He is much more gracious and kind to you, than you are to yourself. Here's what Jesus had to say in the gospel of Matthew. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30
I'm encouraging you today whether you are new in Christ, or if you've known Him for a long time. Yes, even Christians get depressed! Go to Him in prayer, seek Him and take on His yoke and you will find comfort and rest for your weary soul. ( yoke: A crossbar with two U-shaped pieces that encircle the necks of a pair of oxen or other draft animals working together.) The symbol of the yoke Jesus used here, describes how one caries his or her burdens in life. You can either try to carry life's burdens on your own, and believe you me they are heavy, just like oxen yokes are heavy and burdensome. Or you can take on Jesus yoke, and let Him carry all the weight of your burdens, giving much needed rest for your soul.
There is another very important Scripture that factors in here. "3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God." 8We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that. 9Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 10He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many." (II Corinthians 1:3,4 and 8-11).
In this above passage, Paul, the Apostle, says he even despaired of life. WOW, someone like Paul depressed and despairing of life! How can that be? Because he was human, just like you and me. God understands our humanness and so it's ok if we get depressed. It's just, what do we do in that depressed state? God wants us to reach out to Him for comfort, and a lot of times that comfort comes through His children. That was what happened in my case. There were some good Christian people that non-judgmentally listened to my hurts and helped counsel me through the tough times. Yes, they are out there! Reach out, like you are now!
Also, a very good book that I read some 25yrs.
ago by Christian author/pastor Charles Swindoll, really helped me through a that
very tough time. I was able to see that God was my comforter and that even
though I was in a lot of pain, God had a purpose for my pain and suffering. I
was to become a healed helper some day. So here I am, testifying to the God of
all comfort, who comforted me in my time of need, so I could pass it on to
others like you. It can and will be true in your life as well, if you just open
up your heart to His loving-kindness and allow the God of all comfort to comfort
your weary soul. Here's a link, if you are interested in purchasing this book
on-line. The name of the book is, "For those who hurt"
Remember, that God through Jesus Christ does not condemn you for struggling. Read Romans Chapt. 8 where he says, 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. So, it's not God condemning you, rather He wants to comfort and heal your wearing soul.
Another way of looking at God, is as a Good Shepherd. Gentle, kind and caring. I made a website regarding this theme. I have found viewing God as He really is, not base on negative impressions growing up, can be really comforting. Here's the link: The Good Shepherd
The Psalmist's had plenty of their share of struggles also. They became depressed, yet they had hope in God's unfailing love to deliver them. See Psalm 6 for example, "My soul is in anguish. How long, O LORD, how long?" "I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears." The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer. Psalms 6:3,6,9 So, it's ok to struggle with depression and suicidal feelings, but remember this, God will never fail you. He will show you the way out, and He will heal your wounded heart, if you will only let Him. Do it right now, talk to Him, through the name above all names, Jesus Christ. He's a gentle, kind, Good Shepherd, just waiting to comfort you. Come as you are, He will never leave you, forsake you or reject you. You are His child, precious in His sight. I know it's true!
Finally, scroll down and check out a song by the group, "Delirious?," that has become very meaningful to me. (You can play it by clicking on the link) It speaks clearly about God's love and Him giving me (you) a second chance and reason to live again. It speaks of waiting for the light to break, which is important when you are in pain and find it hard to see and understand why you are going through this time of difficulty. That's what hope and faith are all about, being able to see beyond the pain, when there will be comforting relief and deliverance. Like the Psalmist says in Psalm 30:5, "Weeping may last for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning"
