Jesus Did It!
IT IS GONE!
Words Of Life Fellowship (Landover, MD)
A simple, routine knee surgery turned into a major trial for Pastor Talbert ... nearly costing him his life! This is his testimony of struggle, faith, and a resulting miraculous healing that he wants to give God thanks and glory publicly for.
This is not a testimony of great faith and a gallant hero. It is simply a story of the grace and miraculous power of God.
Three years ago, I noticed a slight pain in my left knee and some minor swelling. When this occurred before, my doctor would drain the fluid out of the knee and I would go on my way. This time the fluid did not come out and I was referred to a specialist for further examination. The diagnosis was that I had a meniscus tear (torn cartilage) in my knee. A simple in-and –out medical procedure called arthroscopic surgery (use of a mini-sized camera and surgical instruments) would resolve the problem. The surgery was very brief and uneventful. I could not believe the surgery was so effective and I was on my feet walking around spry and without pain. The doctor was so proud of his work, he showed my wife his “perfect surgery” before and after photos.
Approximately three weeks later, while my wife and I were in a local mall, my legs began to feel heavy. There was no swelling or anything apparently different about my legs. I remarked to my wife that I could understand that the leg upon which I had the surgery might feel heavy, but I wondered why the other leg was feeling so odd. I pretty much ignored the discomfort until every step I took I began to feel exhausted. I told my wife I had to sit down. Something strange was happening. I waited at the mall exit until she finished shopping. Little did I imagine the journey to follow. That night I felt extremely tired, became disoriented [with stroke-like symptoms], and experienced shortness of breath. We immediately went to the nearest hospital emergency room. After 11-12 hours of waiting and X-rays, I was sent home with no relief and increasing shortness of breath. I was treated by hospital staff without care or concern.
The next day we went to another emergency room. After eight or so hours, numerous tests and a spinal tap, I began to think the attending physicians were not being forthright with me. One doctor thought he had discovered a serious condition, but indicated that a second opinion was necessary. The other doctor abruptly countered his colleagues’ diagnosis by saying the situation was not as serious as originally thought. He also stated that the spinal tap examine was not conclusive because the medical technician did the procedure improperly.
Things were becoming really strange. I was sent home on a very strong sedative. I continued to have difficulty breathing, heaviness in my legs and a disquieted spirit. The next morning I felt better and encouraged my wife to go to work. She was reluctant to leave, but I did not want her to use any more “leave” than absolutely necessary.
An hour later, I went down stairs to my living room and experienced the shock of my life. I felt a tremendous jolt in my chest and seemingly all my breath left. My first thought was that I was having a heart attack. I crawled up the steps to my bedroom and experienced more pressure on my chest. Not wanting to alarm my wife, I just lay on the bed and decided to try to hold on until my wife came home at midday. My wife returned home and seeing my worsened condition was stressed and in a state of unbelief. She prayed to God to send help-- feeling the situation was too much to carry alone.
My nephew called soon after my wife prayed. GOD IS AN ON-TIME GOD. She told him about the three day ordeal and the emergency room experiences. He suggested that we go to a major hospital center across town from which he had been recently discharged. While in that hospital he had become aware of a network of specialists who were competent and thoughtful. He was confident that staff would expedite things for us—no more long waits.
After approximately three hours in the emergency room, a specialist came into my room to tell me “Don’t move! “ The MRI revealed that I had a pulmonary embolism associated with the knee surgery. There were three blood clots—one in each of my legs and one in my left lung. The doctor repeatedly said, “This could be a catastrophe.”
He asked me if I understood what he was really saying. I stated, “You are saying I could die.” He responded that I was right. An intern showed my family a photo of the blood clot on my lung. He indicated that it was the largest they had seen at that hospital.
The only hope was to have surgery to insert a filter in one of my blood vessels to block any subsequent blood clot that could travel to my brain. Without the procedure, I would likely have a fatal aneurysm. I was shocked. I had never been hospitalized before. Things were happening so fast. There were days of waiting and wondering when the filter was going to be inserted. Every moment was vital and failure to operate soon could end my life. The doctors repeatedly rescheduled the operation without explanation. (My brother-in-law and older brother had died years ago in cases involving blood clots.) Was I going to have a similar fate?
The voice of the adversary began to whisper in my ears, “See what God has allowed to happen to you. You don’t deserve this. You are helpless and could die at any time. You’re a born-again believer and look at what’s happening to you. “
It was humiliating not being able to bath myself. At the same time, a host of questions ran through my mind: What is God saying to me? How is my illness affecting our church? What is the impact of my sickness upon my wife? Many visitors came, but I just wanted to find relief, to be quiet and to go home. Solemn sorrow and depression followed. In the midst of my darkest time another voice spoke to my soul from the Word of God, saying: “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. “(Psalms 34:19). A CALM AND COMFORTING PEACE CAME OVER ME.
Finally, after three days, the surgery to insert the filter was done. The procedure was very brief, painless, and uneventful. My tension and frustration lessened. I was sent home with a very disappointing prognosis that my breathing would probably not become normal until about a year—extensive talking, singing and preaching were not to be. I was cautioned that there were no guarantees; the surgery was not an automatic fix and only time and medication would solve the blood clot problems. I felt like I was entering a whole new world and it was like a rollercoaster ride. Twice a day I had to give myself injections of medicine in my stomach to prepare to go on blood thinners. My stomach was often bruised and swollen because I failed to insert the needles properly.
My recovery was very slow and being bed-ridden was taking its toll. I began to loose interest in everything, but deep within my faith was carrying me—the Holy Spirit was making intercession for me. (See: Romans 8:26) The Word of God was still talking every time the voice of doubt spoke.
Very slowly I was able to move around and eventually sit in the pulpit while my son and the other church elder preached.
Three months (not 12 months) later, I felt a “move” in my chest and my breathing was miraculously restored to normal, and the heaviness began to dramatically leave my legs!
I called my wife and told her something wonderful had happened and I believed the blood clot on my lung was gone. God had given us another miracle. “… with his stripes we are healed”, (Isaiah 53:5).
I immediately called my doctor (who is also a believer) and told him that I thought the clot was gone. He told me to go to the hospital right away and get another MRI. While preparing for the MRI, I told the two technicians about my journey and they told me that the pulmonary embolism could have killed me. While the MRI was being completed, great joy was expressed by the technicians. They knew a miracle had occurred and notified my doctor. The doctor confirmed the MRI results and issued an official medical report that “There is no evidence of blood clots or pulmonary embolism in this patience’s body. God had healed me again. To God be ALL the glory.
What a journey. God is no respecter of persons and can heal you too.
