THE HURTING HITCHHIKER ENCOUNTER
Jesus Did It!
By: Norm Rasmussen
Charlie was the hitchhiker. Denny was the driver of the car that was about to drive right on past Charlie. Let someone else pick him up, Denny thought to himself. I'll be late for my appointment.
Denny had not had a good week. To top things off, he had not slept well the night before, and now he felt groggy. Let someone else pick him up, he thought again.
Seventy-five yards past the hitchhiker and he sensed something wasn't right. Something inside his tired brain seemed to be saying:
Why not give him a ride? What will it hurt?
But I'm tired and I'm running late. I don't want to talk with anyone right now - especially a stranger, he almost said out loud to himself.
But he needs a ride. You know how long he might wait there before someone is brave enough to pick him up. You're a Christian. You have the faith that God will protect you.
Oh, all right, Denny thought to himself, and pressed on the brake. Slowly he backed up to the hitchhiker.
Several minutes later Charlie began confiding with Denny. "Got in a big fight with my wife and I'm leaving the state! I'm going to Nevada. I've got a job dealing cards waiting for me when I get there. If my wife wants me she can find me there. I've had it with her!"
Denny made small talk to make Charlie feel comfortable. However, halfway to Holland, Michigan, thoughts began to run through his tired head. Acting on those thoughts, he felt he had nothing to lose. He would never see this hitchhiker again.
"At the risk of offending you"
"Charlie, at the risk of offending you, what do you think of this book?" Denny reached down and picked up a Bible lying beside him, and held it up for Charlie to see.
Charlie was silent for some time, and then answered strangely. "I know I'm not living the way I should be. But it's hard. It's hard being a Christian. Uh, I used to be a Christian, but I haven't lived like one in a long, long time."
Denny's jaw about dropped to the floorboard of the car. All he had wanted to do was somehow change the topic of conversation to God, instead of merely making small talk. He wasn't hinting for any intimate confessions.
It was at that point that Denny snapped out of his fog. It was no coincidence this guy said what he had just said. Suddenly Denny sensed the Lord had this guy sitting alongside him for a reason, and he began to quietly ask the Lord how he should minister to him. Strong thoughts began to come, and by faith, Denny began to share some truth from the Bible. It was suddenly no surprise to Denny that Charlie had never heard these truths, for his questions in response were coming in rapid-fire succession.
The spiritual hunger in Charlie became most evident, and to answer questions more carefully, Denny pulled his car off the highway so he could concentrate fully on what he was saying.
"Charlie, as you are obedient to the scriptures in the Bible, asking the Lord to help you in those areas where you have besetting sins, you will find meaning and purpose in this life like never before. Get yourself in a good Bible teaching church and learn some foundational truths. As you grow in the Lord, you'll see for yourself that Christianity isn't something you have to do. It's a privilege - an opportunity."
Forty-five minutes later Denny felt led of the Holy Spirit to pray with Charlie. Charlie was so thankful that someone would pray with him, and he expressed it by the tears beginning to roll down his cheeks.
Denny checked his watch. He had to be at his appointment in east Grand Rapids in less than an hour and his wife was waiting for him to pick her up. Charlie was stepping out of the car when another strong thought ran through Denny's mind.
"You sure I'm to give him a $20?"
But Lord, Denny thought in silent rebuttal, that $20 tucked away in my wallet is for something else. You sure I'm to give him a $20?
Denny reached for his wallet when he heard no reply from the Holy Spirit. He sensed the silence meant an emphatic "Yes." Opening up the secret compartment, he unfolded a $20 bill and said to Charlie as he handed it to him. "The Lord said to give this to you. Hop back in and I'll drive you over to Rock Island Restaurant for a hot breakfast. They serve excellent food there."
Charlie just stood there dumbfound-ed. A few seconds passed, and then tears rolled down his eyes one more time. Wiping them away, he said, "You don't know how much this means to me. I haven't had a bite to eat in three days."
As Denny relayed this story to me, he couldn't get over how close he had come to driving right on past Charlie that morning. "You know," he said to me in closing, "having the opportunity to minister to him was a real blessing, but I have never in my life had a better feeling inside me than when I saw those tears running down his eyes when I handed him that $20. Am I ever thankful that I was obedient to the Holy Spirit. And to think, I almost didn't recognize the Holy Spirit even when He was talking to me."
