Are
You Searching for Meaning in Life?
By: Evert Stone
On
Monday, 25 October 1999, I was walking on my way home, thinking about what Jesus
said would happen to the church before He returns to take His chosen ones to
heaven. I became very disturbed at what lies ahead and in my mind I communicated
with the Lord concerning my thoughts. I wondered if it would be possible to lay
down my life for the Lord if it should be necessary. I answered my own question
by thinking that it would be possible only if the Spirit of the Lord enables me
to do so.
Within
the next few seconds, three aggressive men surrounded me. They took my cellular
phone from the pouch that was fixed onto my belt. Two of them were out of my
eyesight probably standing behind me, while the other one, taller and bigger
than myself, stood before me. I saw him taking and opening a knife from his
pocket and pointing it towards me. It would take only a swift movement from him
to drive the blade into my body. As I stared at his hand with the knife, I saw a
bloodstain on his hand. The thought came to me that probably they have mugged
someone else just before me, and stabbed that person with this same knife. My
briefcase was still in my right hand and my purse in my pocket. I drew cash
earlier that morning at the ATM.
Something
unusual suddenly happened. I personally believe that the Holy Spirit took
control over me. I can remember looking up into the mans eyes standing with
the knife. In a calm way the following words were uttered towards him: In the
Name of Jesus, leave me alone
It was as if he did not hear me well enough
and he replied: Who? With my left hand I took out the cross that was
hanging on my neck below my shirt. I repeated the same words: In the Name of
Jesus, leave me alone
I
do not have words to tell you exactly what happened next. Those same three guys
fled away from me in two different directions as if something was haunting them.
When I realized it was the Lord of lords who intervened, I shouted at the top of
my voice: Lord, please save them all
Hallelujah and some other
utterances of praising His name. They kept on running and disappeared around the
street corners. This time people were hanging from their apartment windows
hearing the noise I made and I had the opportunity to witness about Gods
greatness, goodness, love and mercy.
It
was as if a new fire was burning inside of me a fire created by our Lords
Spirit. I shared with friends about what had happened. Later that evening, I
went back to the office because I wanted to share this testimony with my
relatives. I got the opportunity to share the gospel again with family, friends
and strangers that same evening. While browsing through the Bible the next
morning, my eye caught different verses in Scripture of encouragement.
We
must remember that the Lord will never leave or forsake us even though we go
through hard times in our life. He promised that He would be with His children
until the end of the world. Do not be afraid of them that only can kill the
body, because our souls and spirits are safe with our Lord. Do not be happy
because we have dominion over the evil spirits, but rejoice and be glad for our
names are written in the book of life.
