THE UNBEATABLE TRIO:
CHRIST – LOVE - FORGIVENESS
By: Raynee Kremer
I realize that Jesus doesn’t make terrible things happen, but He does allow difficult time's for a reason. As I write this, it is January, 2008. The last two years have been a horrible time of pain; a time of a great falling away from God, yet a time of renewal and restoration back to God ... for me, my husband, children and my parents.
After all our family has gone through, I wouldn’t trade it for anything! God used our time of trial to work a miracle! Allow me to share about this miracle.
Both of my parents were terminally ill, and there was nobody willing to take care of them in their final days. We had not spoken for over five years due to a very wicked argument.
However, my oldest brother took care of their finances. (Thank God, because I’m terrible with money. He did his work well. He doesn’t know it, but he is a man after God's heart, and my parents would have been proud of him). Anyway, I took on their health care needs -- a difficult decision to make at best. In no way do I mean to take on the face of a martyr, because I took on the task with great trepidation. I knew this was not going to be easy for my family. What made it the most difficult for me was my anger toward them.
(Left: One of those angels God gave me along this
rough path; my brother, Mike)
For two years, we watched my parents slowly die, and a very strange thing began to happen. The anger began to melt away. When I was angry at them, it had been a "comfortable place" to be in. I had always wanted them to suffer someday for the injustice they had done to me and my family. It made me numb to the pain and sorrow of not seeing my parents; it justified everything! However, now something was different. I was confused! I didn‘t know it was forgiveness at work.
Forgiveness is one of the strongest enemies the devil has. Next to Christ Himself is forgiveness. They walk hand in hand with love. I call them the “unbeatable trio”.
As time passed, my husband and I began to pray with Mom and Dad. We brought them pies and their favorite Burger King shakes and Hawaiian foods. Every Monday night my husband would go sit by my father’s bed and watch football with him, not that my father was really interested in the game anymore. I think he just enjoyed Mike being there and talking with him.
Still at times it was a very difficult situation. I would get consumed with guilt over not speaking to them for as long as I did. I would cry out to God, "Now when they are dying, here I am taking care of their most private needs and watching them suffer so horribly.”
Then I was plagued with the thoughts: I'm too late! I'm a terrible person and I'm being punished. How can I ever go to heaven? God could never love me!
As a matter of fact, I was angry at God for all that was happening...angry that He put me in this position in this first place! (Pretty selfish, huh?)
After all, from my perspective, my parents were in a pretty rotten position. My father had been a hard working man who was crowned the nickname “Dirty Ernie” because of his hard work. He never was afraid to get down in the dirt and grime to accomplish a task. He was a man of great energy, now so desperately working for every breath he took, as emphysema was eating away at his lungs.
Then there was my mother. She was a woman whom by her very nature loved to talk, and she did it so well (and so loud!). She also could out-walk and out-run us kids when we were supposed to be faster than her. Now each day she lost her ability to move and speak or feed herself, until she was trapped in a body that no longer would work. All she could do was stare out from her frozen body. A nurse would turn her every hour to keep her body from bed sores, or I would massage her feet and neck as they would stiffen due to the ravages of Parkinson’s disease.
However, there was solace; there was peace. Jesus was able to take all my selfish anger, which caused so many years of pain … and change my heart. He also changed the hearts’ of my parents as well, because they too came to Christ before their passing.
Through all the suffering, we came to understand something very, very precious. We learned that love was the only thing that could get us through, and we could not get away from the loving Spirit that was guiding us. We could feel God's love around us; it was and is an unmistakable presence.
The night before my father passed away, he was talking to someone. Although we could not see who it was he was talking to, we heard him ask, “Are you sure you want to take me before her?”
Then he said, “Okay - okay” … very calmly and in agreement.
From that hour on my father did not need his oxygen mask anymore. His breathing was calm and he slept. It was a miracle. He was at peace.
He went to be with Jesus the next day wearing his very favorite T-shirt -- the one that read: “Got Jesus.”
As I look back, I remember that as he got closer to the end, he had no concern over himself. All he asked was that I take care of Mom. He loved her very much. I never saw that growing up. They were always at odds, but God can do some awesome things in people’s lives before their time is over here in this life. All it takes is one person praying and trusting for God to soften the most hardened heart.
My mother survived one year beyond my father’s death. She missed my father deeply. The sadness was there, but the blessings kept coming to get us all through.
The Parkinson’s disease moved rapidly. We moved Mom to a wonderful Assisted Living home. She felt it was like a little family. One lady would come every week to pray with her and read the Bible. Mom loved that and Hospice Care came in to take care of her other health needs. They were all her angels of mercy in a sense.
In the end, she was heavily medicated for most of her final weeks. On that last morning at 2:10 AM, she opened her eyes and began to form words with no sound, yet I could read her lips. She was saying, “I’m going to die. I love you.” She repeated that three times.
I could feel something in the room, and so I whispered to her, “Mom, I know what you are saying and I love you too. I’ll see you again; you can go in peace now.”
Then I asked her, “Do you see the angels? They are here.”
Her eyes then fixed on something that was behind me, and she never looked at me again.
I went on to tell her, “You go with them because Jesus is waiting for you at the gates of heaven with His arms open, and everyone else is waiting there for you too.”
I remember saying, “Goodbye, Mom. I’ll see you again.”
Then she turned a bit...holding on to the side bar of the bed like she was holding on to a roller coaster ride...and she closed her eyes, then peacefully left.
You would think after all I have seen with Dad I would not be surprised, but I guess God's works are always a wonder to His children. My Mom was a woman, whom before she accepted Christ...always greatly fearful of death, but in the end…she faced death without fear. She just went Home peacefully to be with the King. It was a clear demonstration of God's grace is all that can be said.
When Mom left this world, I didn’t nearly fall apart as much as I expected to. I always thought I would. I had always put her up much too high on a pedestal. I made her my god. What a horrible sin. It is what kept me from accepting the true and only God. It is what kept me from surrendering fully to Jesus Christ.
In fact, the night Mom passed I felt a strange and great peace. Now that’s not to say I didn’t do my share of crying. I have cried a lot. I’m human, but I’ve never been alone along the way, and I never will be alone again!
I now realize that had it not been for everything that happened, we most likely would never have seen the wonderful love of Christ and how forgiving He really is. My anger alone was what put me in my situation, and love was the only thing that would ever get both myself and my parents out of that bondage. The amazing love that comes only from Christ did that. What a mighty work! Now I fully believe all things are possible. I will see my parents in Heaven, when God calls me Home, and the greatest gift is that I'll be there with the Father to glorify and praise His name!
So now I have a favor to ask of you.
I believe this gift of salvation God gave myself, my parents and my family can happen for all of us.
My sister is in need of Christ as well. She has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. She can no longer walk and is in constant pain. She and her husband have not accepted Jesus into their hearts'. My sister is full of anger. Her life has been one consumed by drugs, alcohol and New Age deception. In many ways, she is as I was! Her mental illness and paranoia has caused her to not speak to most of the family. However, through the grace and love of God...by their acceptance of Him in their lives, they will see God in all His glory when He calls them home.
I ask that you would pray for their Salvation...that they would open their heart to Christ. I know He is there with His arms open, ready to take my sister Home, as he will take all who accept His grace of love and forgiveness.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
