SPEAK UP WHILE YOU CAN!

Jesus Did It!

By: Daniel Vanderboegh

Over 25 years ago I was almost silenced without really having use of my voice for the purpose God had intended.  I had always been shy and did not speak up unless absolutely necessary.  So getting up and giving a testimony was out of the question.  I also felt God had not done anything special in my life worth talking about.

I grew up in the church and believed in God, His Son, and His Holy Spirit lying within me, but I never proclaimed them as my source of power.  I did as so many Christians do -- draw on God’s strength in private and hide Him while in public.

This testimony actually starts back in 1983 with me having a persistent sore throat and difficulty swallowing.  Over the counter medication did not help and so I finally sought the help of my family doctor.  He put me on antibiotics, which seemed to do the trick at first, but soon afterwards the problem returned.  He finally referred me to an ear, nose and throat specialist.  He found a nodule on my epiglottis - the flap that covers your windpipe when you swallow.  He said that was the cause of the problem and would have to be removed.

The surgery was scheduled for the day after Labor Day, a quick procedure that would have me out of the hospital before lunch.  The Friday before, I went to the hospital for tests and a walk through as to what to expect.  It all seemed so simple and I had confidence in my doctor.  There seemed to be no need to involved God in it.  He had bigger things to handle, I felt.

The day of my operation went well until I opened my eyes in the recovery room.  Instead of the outpatient recovery room I was in the regular recovery room.  I called the nurse over and tried to explain the mistake but all she would say was “The doctor would be in to see me.”  This was before 8 a.m.  I started to get worried.

By nine o’clock I was up in a room and in a regular hospital bed.  Outpatients don’t need this.  Again I asked a nurse what the problem was, only to receive the same answer.  Now I began tensing up.  Every muscle in my body contracted and was cramping.  I don’t like not knowing what is going on, especially if it has to do with me.

Finally my wife and father arrived, looking as confused as I felt.  They had no knowledge as to why I was being admitted.

It wasn’t until 1:30 p.m. before my doctor came in to see us.  He told me I had a tumor in my esophagus just bellow where the esophagus and larynx join.  No matter what, it had to go.  All my fears went into full grown panic when I heard “cancer”.  I was never so scared before in my life.

This second surgery was scheduled for the follow Monday, but my doctor wanted me in the hospital so I would be available for lab tests, scans, x-rays, and to fatten me up.  I weighted about 150 pounds and would be eating only liquids through a nasal-gastric tube.  Also there were consultations from different people.  They were preparing me for losing my voice box.  In order to keep me optimistic, the doctors said I had a 50/50 chance of loosing it.  Their actual estimate was slim to none.

I was a nervous wreck that week.  My muscles remained tensed up and screamed for relief, but I could not relax.  I became very jumpy and could not sleep very well.  I refused medication to relax me or help me sleep.  When I should have been seeking out God’s help, I turned from God and cursed Him. “Why are you putting me through this?!  I have enough problems to handle – I don’t need this on top of it!”  I found myself at a low point in my faith.  I was sure God had deserted me.

On Sunday afternoon I finally got some much needed rest.  I slept very soundly for several hours and awoke to find my wife and our minister sitting there.  He came to prepare me for the following morning and to re-assure me.  As he talked I suddenly realized something was different.  All my muscles had relaxed.  I was not sore, and my fears had disappeared.  I had a feeling I had never had before.  I felt so calm and assured.  I was listening to my Lord and He was telling me I was going to keep my voice box.  I was never so sure of anything in my whole life.  So – I went into the operation assured by God as to the results.

The operation was scheduled to take four hours.  It ended up taking 12 ½ hours; 2 sets of O.R. nurses, my doctor and his partner … after cancelling their appointments for the day, and a long distance phone call.  It also took God to orchestrate the full affair.

On a follow-up visit with my doctor I told him about God reassuring me as to the result before the operation.  He sat down and asked if I was ready for “the rest of the story.”

He said my neck was opened up and he was about to cut out the tumor and my voice box when a voice in the back of his mind said, “Not the easy way – the right way.”

“I set down the scalpel and re-examined the tumor.  The tumor had not attached to the larynx and I remembered an article I had just read about encapsulating a tumor with minimum damage to surrounding tissue.  I called the Mayo Clinic, talked to the doctors that developed the procedure, and found you were a prime candidate for it.  That was the reason for the extended surgery and my being able to tell you the story.”

God wanted me to be able to speak.  This had become my main testimony and He has used my voice and testimony to reach many others through the years.  But God didn’t stop with my physical healing.  He foresaw the financial overload and took care of it before it could be a problem.  My doctors and the hospital reduced their fees for the bragging rights of being the first ones outside of the Mayo Clinic to use this procedure.  It was a mater of pride and prestige for them.  Even the American Cancer Society helped out for a promise that they could monitor my progress and I would speak to groups and individuals about my ordeal.

I’m proud to be able to speak about what God has done for me.  Sure, I can no longer sing in a rich baritone voice, but I can talk.  God has given me my voice for a second time and I’m glad to use it to praise Him.  I feel everyone should use their voices to tell others about what God has done for them.  Your testimony may not seem like much to you, but it MAY touch someone else at just the right time.  Use your voice before you find yourself silenced.
