CAST YOUR CARES UPON GOD, FOR HE WANTS YOU TO
Jesus Did It!
By: Norm Rasmussen
From time to time, we all have issues we have to deal with that can rob us of peace and joy, and try to replace peace and joy with worry - fear - anger – levels of depression. Our enemy, the devil, patently waits for circumstances to start “rocking our boat,” and will then try to get the most mileage out of these things in doing what he delights in doing the most: Helping make our lives as miserable as possible.
God knew this was going to happen, and he gave His disciples weapons to use in Ephesians 6:10-18 to keep our adverse circumstances minimized.
God clearly and bluntly let’s us know Satan’s demons never sleep, but are constantly going to look for opportunities to bring as much pain into our lives as possible, when it was written:
Be sober; be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. – 1 Peter 5:8-9 NKJV
Not coincidently placed at all is the scripture verse that precedes this reminder of Satan’s persistent, relentless attacks upon believers in Christ:
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 NKJV
Here God is telling us that one of the most important weapons - one of the greatest benefits - He has given us to resist Satan’s attacks upon our joy and peace and intimacy with God is to stop trying to solve every problem that comes our way in OUR OWN STRENGTH; BY OUR OWN POWER; BY OUR OWN MEANS. Give it to God instead! Give HIM our burden! Include Him in it, for deliverance if necessary ... for provision if necessary ... for whatever wisdom might dictate in the situation.
I mean … think about it. If He didn’t want us giving Him our troubles – giving Him our adverse cares – why would He tells us to do so in the first place? He tells us so we’ll be wise enough to do it!
Do you know why so many Christians have such a difficult time giving their cares to God – casting them upon Him? Because of pride. Out of pride comes an attitude of self-sufficiency. Out of self-sufficiency comes the inward reminder that if I can solve all my own problems, I get the glory for it. Getting the glory for it fuels my fleshly ego. Think it is any “coincidence” that the Holy Spirit tells us in 1 Peter 5:6 “to humble ourselves?” I think not.
Yet because we’ve had to handle most of our own problems since our life began, we can be blinded to the truth that: YES – Not only can we cast ALL our cares upon Jesus – He is imparting wisdom to us and directly telling us that it is wise to do so - so we don’t give Satan any more of a foothold than necessary into our situations.
People are becoming stressed more and more. Rush rush – hurry hurry – worry worry. Satan loves stress upon Christians because it is a door he gets to walk through if we aren’t alert to it. Much of the stress we take upon ourselves is more than what need be … simply because we aren’t DOING what God tells us to do when stress seeks to descend upon us. Just to reinforce the point: God wants us to give Him our burdens. He wants us giving Him our troubles – our worries – our fears - our concerns -- every thing that has the potential to rob us of our peace and joy and excitement and trust in God.
Some Christians struggle with being able to give God their cares because they have believed the devil’s lie that God expects us to solve most of our problems ourselves … not “using God as some crutch.”
Certainly we must make certain decisions and take appropriate actions at times to work through the cares that have come our way, but I believe God is saying that it is WISDOM to patiently and persistently seek His counsel and accept it, and accept any help He decides to give us … as soon as we are confronted with some potentially adverse situation. Doing such is NOT using God as a crutch. It is simply one of the benefits of being a follower of Jesus Christ, and it is clear demonstration to God that we want to allow Him to use every opportunity we can to strengthen our friendship of intimate trust with Him.
It is also lot and parcel with “walking in the Spirit.” Throughout New Testament scripture, believers are constantly admonished to NOT “walk in the flesh,” but rather, “walk in the Spirit.” (Walk in unity and fellowship and intimacy and friendship with the Holy Spirit, in other words). Doing so makes life so much easier!
So – if you believe you have mastered the “secret” of walking in the Spirit, yet will be honest with yourself and admit that you struggle with casting your cares upon God … there is room for growth in walking in the Spirit.
Of the many benefits God has given Christian disciples, Satan does NOT want us learning that it not only is OKAY … but in fact is wisdom our part indeed to learn how to include God in everything we are apart of in this life. Include God before the problem festers. Inquiring of God before we make decisions that may not be the wisest decisions afterall. Inquiring of God’s insight and power and wisdom before we just fly off and follow the impulse inside us to do what seems reasonable at the moment.
Walking in the Spirit, dear one, is walking hand-in-hand with the Creator of the universe. It is acknowledging to demons and God and his angels assigned to us that we are learning how to become much wiser in this battle we face here in this life. It is clearly demonstrating to all life-forms that we have a friend who is more than willing “to cover my back” wherever I am … 24-7.
Having a friend who will “watch my back” is no light thing, for it clearly implies to demonic powers that every time they seek to attack me, they BETTER be prepared to deal with God HIMSELF!
Much more can be said about using this benefit God has given believers – the wisdom and privilege of using this benefit weapon of - “Casting our cares upon Him, for He cares for us” … but sometimes it’s good to hear from another writer. Evangelist Bill Keller shared recently in one of his Daily Devotionals some very insightful words that I think help provide some valuable insights into how “to cast our cares upon Him” and the wisdom to do so:
As you know, there is virtually no end to problems. Losing your keys, misplacing your wallet, something going wrong with your car, getting a traffic ticket, something breaking in your home, spilling your coffee in the morning, your computer not working, unexpected issues at work or school, a confrontation with someone we meet, having a routine dentist appointment turn into something more involved, stubbing your toe, not getting the apple pie you ordered in your McDonald's lunch bag, your pet is sick . . . I could go on for hours but I think you get my point.
Every day, just in the course of living through another 24 hours, there are so many things in our lives that happen. Many of these things are totally out of our control and simply problems that we never expected but are suddenly confronted with. I find that for many people, simply dealing with the day-to-day problems life throws at them can be very challenging and often overwhelming.
This is one of the reasons that I frequently tell you we must have a real, committed, 24/7 relationship with the Lord. It would be nice if all of our problems occurred at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning, but that is not reality. The problems of life happen daily, and all throughout the day. I counsel people to start their day in prayer and in the Word of God. It is not only the best way to start your new day, but it will give you the focus and strength to deal with whatever problems life may throw at you during the course of that day.
Paul said to, "Pray without ceasing." I take that LITERALLY. I wake up every morning in prayer and never hang up the phone. I spend the entire day with that line to God open. God has given us the greatest resource there is in the world, a direct line to Him. We are fools if we don't take full advantage of it. There is nothing in your life that you will face that is too big for God to handle or TOO SMALL!
You have got to understand, God cares about you! He loves you! God cares if your keys are lost. God cares if your car won't start. God cares if you spill your coffee. God cares if your hot water heater isn't working. God cares if your boss is giving you a hard time for no reason. God cares if you have a cavity. God cares if your apple pie is missing. God cares about every detail in your life. He loves you that much.
I want to encourage you to "pray without ceasing." (See: 1 Thessalonians 5:17).Start your day in prayer, reading God's Word, and spend the entire day with that line to God OPEN. Prayer demonstrates our dependence on God. When we don't pray, we are depending on ourselves. John 15:5 tells us, "Without me, you can do nothing." Why be so foolish to try and deal with the day-to-day problems of life alone, when God is ready, willing, and able to help us?
You will be amazed how much easier each day is when we are operating in His strength and not ours. You will be amazed at how much more peace and joy there is each day, despite the problems of life, when we are relying on God and not ourselves.
This could be one of the most profound words I have ever shared because it is so relevant and necessary to our daily lives. The key to knowing God's peace, God's joy, and the abundance of this life, is by living each day in constant communication with Him. Start your day in prayer and keep that line open ALL DAY LONG.
It won't make all the problems of life go away, but it is how you can live each day (more peacefully) no matter what problems life may throw at you.

I inserted the words “(more peacefully)” in Bill's last sentence because Jesus promises/promised us His peace in John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
The world doesn't have the means to assign more angels to us if needed. Jesus does. He ever lives to make intercession with the Father to look our for the welfare of his disciples. The world has not one solution to deal with demonic powers within their own means. The combined might of all military forces on this planet cannot threaten one demon. Yet Jesus can. The world does not know the beginning from the end. Jesus does. The world can launch every nuclear warhead simultaneously in attempts to obliterate planet earth and every living creature on it, yet they have to get the approval of Jesus first for them to detonate. Jesus holds all things in His power. Jesus IS all power, and holds all authority over creation. Any power demons currently have or people have is what Jesus allows them to have, whether they believe it or not. The Father is pleased to allow Jesus to have the full rights He has, and pleased to allow the Holy Spirit to make certain the will of Jesus is enforced, because the will of Jesus is the will of the Father and the will of the Holy Spirit. He has not only the Holy Spirit to enforce His will at any given time, but He also has myriads and myriads of angels at His disposal if it suits His purpose. What God wants, He gets. What God desires will get fulfilled ... in His ways ... in His time.
We do not need to fear Satan nor his demons, nor any human that tries to do harm to us. (But that doesn't imply that we are to remain ignorant of their devices - tactics - strategies - personal attacks upon us - however. God didn't give us the weapons of His warfare against evil powers as spoken of in Ephesians 6:10-18 just to display in some "cosmic museum." He gave them to us to USE, because He knew we would need them!).
Demonic powers and evil people will only do what Jesus allows them to do at any given time. Jesus may let them behead us, so the end result is that we are ushered into glory with Him. Or - Jesus may restrain them as they try to chop off our head. Not a sword will touch our neck unless Jesus permits it to happen. Jesus and the Father and the Holy Spirit are totally sovereign. They always were. They always will be. They have every right to be, because they hold all power. POWER happens to be one of their names, if we want to fully understand the essence of the matter of power! Any power anyone else has, which includes Satan and the demons, is solely because the Godhead has allowed them to have it for a season. Just a season at that ... to accomplish God's overall will for a future to come beyond our wildest comprehension right now. Can you smile, mighty man or woman of God?!
Nevertheless, fear and worry are two of Satan’s most useful means to make our heart troubled. Fear and worry will strip us of our peace in the Lord quickly, which then strips us of our trust in the Lord quickly. Taking upon ourselves the troubles that come our way and not quickly taking them to the Lord and asking HIM what we’re to do about those troubles … Satan absolutely delights in our doing, because he knows that in our doing so … we are not resisting him as much as possible, which then means he becomes even more energized to try to have us for his next meal. In other words, “a means to devour us” as God alerts us to in 1 Peter 5:8:
Be sober; be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him …
You and I will never reach a place of being able to "resist him" as much as possible if we don't strive to learn everything you can about "casting your cares upon Him, for He cares for YOU."
How else does God teach us what we need to know and learn about regarding "casting our cares upon Him"? By trial and error, most of the time. By DOING it. It's part of the Holy Spirit's function on our behalf, to teach us and guide us in how to tap in to every benefit God has given us in Christ Jesus our Lord and personal Savior.
