The Bible states “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)
I believe the most important revelation of truth God wants us getting from Him regarding this above scripture passage is that without believing that Jesus Christ paid full penalty for our sins on the cross so we could be forgiven of them and so they wouldn’t be held against us on the Judgment Day … we are not pleasing God in the way He wants to be pleased. The “impossible” in the scripture passage to me clearly means: “There is no other way to receive eternal salvation (forgiveness – eternal life) than to believe that Jesus Christ paid full penalty for all your sins by dying on the cross and that is the ONLY way you’ll ever receive forgiveness for them to stay out of hell.”
And if having our sins forgiven so we won’t be judged for them and sent to hell isn’t as Good of News as a person could hear and receive into their heart … there is even MORE God did by allowing Jesus Christ to suffer in our place on the cross. God imputed His RIGHTEOUSNESS to us who believe! And why is that such a big deal? Without having the very righteousness - holiness - of God, simply having our sins forgiven STILL wouldn’t be enough to please God to keep us out of hell. We need to be as righteous and holy as He is righteous and holy! And so by the love and mercy of God, He gave us not only forgiveness by Christ’s death, burial and resurrection back to heaven … he ALSO gave us HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS! Now let’s go to another portion of God’s Word. Jesus had cursed a fig tree. We read about it in Mark 11:14. Not long after, to his amazement, Peter observes that the fig tree has dried up from the roots, and is now good for nothing but firewood.
So Jesus answered Peter and the other disciples: “Have faith in God” (Mark 11:22)
If we keep on reading beyond Mark 11:22, we read how Jesus tells His disciples what the power of God can do for them (which includes all disciples of Jesus Christ) when they pray and believe, which is where we learn about the “Prayer of Faith” as is spoken of in James 5:14-16.
But let’s go back to the beginning of what Jesus spoke. When Jesus said, “Have faith in God” … was that a strong suggestion, or could it have been an actual COMMANDMENT to them?
I think most Christians today would assume it was more of a suggestion than a commandment, as I always have simply assumed it was, but recently the Holy Spirit has been asking me personally, “You SURE it is just to STAY a suggestion?”
I feel the primary purpose of this very short writing is to act as a spiritual signpost of sorts to get many to start diligently seeking God more about this question.
Granted – if you are a new Christian, then for you, it may be more of an exhortation - encouragement to have faith in God if you will - in the context in which it is shared. But for those who have been Christians a long time, should it be a command for you and I by now, but the devil has managed to talk you and I into lowering our shield of faith much too often these days?
The spiritual battle rages, saints. Let's purposely keep our spiritual armor on daily and not let our guard down for a moment, no matter how weary we get at times from Satan's fiery darts that constantly try to diminish our faith (unwavering confidence) in God. Once our faith begins to die, what usually replaces it is a type of hopelessness, and hopelessness is the prison Satan wants to ever imprison us with.
God tells us to keep on praying and trusting (no matter how discouraging it can be at times, and trust me, I know how discouraging it can be when trying to believe God for certain things!) Satan relentlessly tries to persuade us that praying and trusting is a waste of our time. Satan knows that once our prayer life (confidence in praying) begins to die, so will our desire to please God in every other area of our life, which is what Satan is always ultimately after in each of us. Let's not give him his way, what say?
No matter how fruitless it can seem at times ... no matter how discouraging and hopeless our situation looks ... no matter how much we may start believing God must not "really" care (which are all powerful tools Satan uses to frustrate us with in our prayer lives). Constantly praying and trusting honors our Lord and Savior. How can we possibly go wrong once we make it our primary purpose for praying and trusting is to honor our Lord and Savior?
